A £24.6 million deal to deliver high-speed fibre broadband to thousands more homes and businesses in Essex has been announced today by Essex County Council and BT. When combined with plans by the private sector, this deal should result in around 87% of premises in the county being able to access fibre broadband by the end of summer 2016.

At Essex County Council’s Cabinet Meeting today (16 July 2013), the decision was taken to move forward to the next step of the Superfast Broadband project which means that Essex County Council will be in a position to announce a preferred bidder and sign a contract for delivery in the coming weeks.

Essex County Council (ECC) is a big step further forward to starting work on upgrading the superfast broadband network. On Thursday 9 May 2013 the Essex BDUK Project was given the green light by Government to issue its tender documents and was also told that the State Aid area where public funds can be spent has been given provisional approval. Government have also indicated that they are keen to see the Essex project move as quickly as possible.

A list has been produced by BDUK which indicates the order that faster broadband will be rolled out across the country. Currently, Essex County Council is low on this list.
