The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, (DSIT) has launched a new plan that aims to make sure no individual, or business is excluded from digital opportunities.
In Essex. 20% of residents are currently offline. This means they lack the devices, connection or skills to get online.
This plan will enhance the work already being done by the council to get more residents online.
The council’s Digital Essex programme helps residents boost their digital skills, access devices, and connect to better broadband.
The programme includes several projects throughout Greater Essex focused on providing devices, affordable broadband and enhancing digital skills.
The programme has helped residents to:
- secure employment
- access and engage in education
- gain access to healthcare
- stay in touch with loved ones
- become less socially isolated
Over the last year Digital Essex’s achievements include:
Councillor Louise McKinlay, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Levelling Up, Communities and Business Engagement at Essex County Council, said: “It is great to see that the United Nations, the Digital Inclusion All Parliamentary report, and DSIT have all recognised Digital Essex’s work which supports best practices for the new Digital Inclusion Action Plan.
“I look forward to seeing the team’s work flourish, leading shared services and enabling digital upskilling through the Digital Help Finder, to support the government’s digital inclusion agenda.”
