Chelmsford to benefit from smart water metering

A new project is set to see Chelmsford receive 90,000 smart water meters.

This initiative, led by Essex and Suffolk Water in partnership with Connexin and facilitated as a pilot by Essex County Council, will see the smart meters installed across the city. This rollout forms part of a broader plan to install 300,000 smart meters across Essex by 2030, supported by a £1.5 billion investment over the next five years.

The first phase of this initiative, led by Connexin, took place from 4 to 17 December in Chelmsford. This involved putting LoRaWAN gateways on around 50 lampposts, this new technology will improve the city's Internet of Things capabilities, starting with smart water readings. Essex County Council, particularly Digital Essex, has played a crucial role in facilitating this project, by allowing the use of their assets and resources, such as lampposts. This initiative will enhance service efficiency and improve the quality of life for residents. The smart meter programme will bring many benefits, including new jobs in the area. Essex and Suffolk Water will spend at least 60p of every £1 with local businesses, boosting the local economy. The programme will require more people to install and maintain the meters, and others to work in offices to assist customers and manage the project.
The second phase of work started on 8 January 2025 and will see a further 75 gateways installed.
Benefits of smart metering
Customers with smart meters use up to 20% less water, saving money and benefiting the environment. Faster leak detection helps protect homes, with 23% of smart meter users identifying leaks early. Reducing water heating costs, as 25% of energy bills come from heating water. Better understanding of water usage helps customers make informed choices to reduce consumption and save money. Smart meters reduce the risk of estimated bills.
This initiative not only enhances the local Internet of Things network but also brings significant economic and environmental benefits. By investing in smart water metering, Essex and Suffolk Water is taking a proactive step towards a more sustainable and efficient future. The Chelmsford community can look forward to improved water management, cost savings, and a boost to the local economy through job creation and local business support.
Quote from Lucy Shepherd, Lead Local Flood Authority Manager, ECC
"Essex is a severely water-stressed area, as highlighted in our new Water Strategy for Essex. We are pleased to work together with water companies to accelerate the rollout of their smart metering programme and reduce demand on this precious resource."
