National Apprenticeship Week: Ameena Arshad

This week marks National Apprenticeship Week, and we're thrilled to celebrate by featuring our fantastic Digital Inclusion Apprentice, Ameena Arshad. Ameena shares her journey, the skills she has acquired, and how her apprenticeship has positively impacted her career.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your role in the Digital Essex team?

My name is Ameena, and I am 21 years old with a passion for advocating for the greater good. As a Digital Inclusion Apprentice, I work to ensure that everyone has equal opportunities as the modern world progresses. Alongside my team, I strive to close the digital divide. I am currently undertaking an apprenticeship with Multiverse and participating in a digital business accelerator course.

What was it that inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship with Digital Essex?

I wanted a role that would set me up for a successful career in today's world and let me help people who are less fortunate.

What does a typical day look like for you in the Digital Essex team?

A typical day in the Digital Essex team involves reviewing device request applications and guiding applicants in the right direction. I also collate and review the team's data to understand our accomplishments. Additionally, I spend time completing coursework and assignments.

What are some of the key skills you have developed during your apprenticeship?

During my apprenticeship, I've learned to communicate better, realising that no question is too silly to ask. I've also become more emotionally aware, which helps me understand and manage feelings. My professionalism and resilience have grown, making it easier to handle challenges. Additionally, I've improved my digital skills, like using Excel formulas and exploring new platforms.

What kind of support/mentorship have you received from your team and managers?

My team and managers have supported me in all parts of my work and learning. They often ask what I'm working on and give me helpful advice. They help me adapt and grow in this work environment.

How do you see your career progressing after completing your apprenticeship?

After finishing my apprenticeship, I'll have a digital business qualification. The skills I've learned are versatile, so I can look at many different job options, both within the company and outside it.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship at Essex County Council?

An apprenticeship at Essex County Council is a great way to start your career. It's a good learning opportunity, and there's plenty of support to help you settle in.

What’s the best part about working in the Digital Essex team?

The best part about working in the Digital Essex team is seeing the positive changes we make in real time. Additionally, the team provides a psychologically safe environment, which makes it a great place to work.
