What is digital inclusion?

Digital inclusion is about making sure that no one is excluded from digital opportunities.

To make this happen, we have created a Digital Strategy for Essex, which sets out our plans to work closely with our key partners to coordinate initiatives that can provide:

  • Access to connectivity and devices
  • Affordable kit and internet connection
  • Adoption of digital skills and the motivation to use digital devices

The barriers to being digitally included

Access

Being able to access good connectivity, whether that be mobile (4G / 5G) or fixed (FTTP) is key to getting online and becoming digitally enabled. Additionally, having access to online enabled devices is a necessity to access this internet and perform online actions.

If you’re struggling with getting access to devices and good connectivity, take a look at what you can do to improve that.

Affordability

While you may have access to good connectivity and devices, being able to afford them is another matter. We are working to promote affordable social tariffs, which are eligible for families on Universal Credit and other benefits.

If you’re struggling with the affordability of getting connected and getting devices, see what support is available to you.

Adoption of digital skills and motivation towards digital

While you may have access to a device and good connectivity, you may not have the digital skills to be able to complete tasks. From using social media through to online banking or using the NHS app, we’re working to improve digital skills across the county. This is especially important as more and more services ‘go online’.

If you’d like to improve your or some you know’s digital skills, take a look at what you can learn today.

What is Digital Essex doing?

Digital Essex is working with key partners across the county to help tackle the causes of people being excluded digitally.

We have recently become a Good Things Foundation ambassador. The Good Things Foundation is a charity looking to fix the digital divide, focusing on creating a world where everyone can access the benefits of digital.

By becoming an ambassador, we have been able to promote and extend the work of the Good Things Foundation, increasing our reach to those in need across Essex.

We also engage with a wide variety of stakeholders and providers across Essex – if you are one of these and would like to engage with us, please let us know by getting in touch!

As a business, you can find further information on how we can collaborate on our business engagement webpage.
