How do I get it?

If fibre broadband is available in your area, please check with a commercial provider what services and speeds are available to you. You may have to switch your package or provider to get a faster connection.

What is happening next?

Superfast Essex is working to extend superfast broadband coverage to 97 percent of Essex by 2020 and our ambition is to reach nearly everyone by the end of 2021.

We held an Open Market Review (OMR) and public consultation in 2016 to find out where in Essex superfast broadband is already available or planned to be rolled out and to identify areas still requiring investment and created a State Aid map of broadband coverage.

Based on the information gathered in 2016, we have added a Phase 3 rollout to our deployment plans meaning a further 24,000 homes and businesses will be able to access superfast broadband as a result of our programme. This takes the overall reach to 144,000.

However we recognise this is not enough and are holding a Public Consultation from Monday 31st July 2017 to Thursday 31st August 2017 to reassess where investment in broadband is still needed so we can plan more work.

We would like feedback from residents and broadband network operators to refresh our 2016 State Aid map of broadband coverage and ensure it is correct.

Community Wi-Fi Scheme

The Community Wi-Fi Scheme has been set up to enable local communities to provide a public Wi-Fi service via their community hubs with support from the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF).

Community hubs can buy a broadband service from APC Solutions or County Broadband who are approved suppliers under our scheme. Initial set up costs will be supported by CIF and community hubs will subsequently need to pay a monthly service charge.

Better Broadband Scheme

The Government has committed to giving every premises in the UK access to a minimum of 2Mbps download speeds, whether they are a resident or business. As part of this commitment, Superfast Essex in conjunction with Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) is offering eligible premises access to a basic satellite or wireless broadband service at a capped cost for the first year. Find out more here.

The Rural Challenge

The Rural Challenge is a small pilot project we are running which will bring ultrafast broadband to rural communities in Essex. Fibre broadband operator Gigaclear plc will deploy Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology to more than 4,000 properties within the pilot area in Epping Forest District, enabling these homes and businesses access to broadband speeds of 50Mbps and up to 1000Mbps.
